Question/Comment:

I am a 53 year old female and was diganosed with cronic EBV (2yrs. ago), which has led to many other medical conditions. Cronic Fatigue, Migrains, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Problems walking and Balance. Now memory problems. I loose words, have problems with math, spelling, forget things and somtimes how to get where I am going. After many tests, Doctors say I have mild Dementia. They started me on Namenda. So far no problems. All is good. Thank You. LD

Question/Comment:

My 84 year old mother has been diagnosed with dementia. She was given zoloft in the past for depression which produced increased confusion, agitation and hallucinations so it was discontinued. Even though she has not been officially diagnosed with Alzheimers they started her on Namenda 4 months ago. Now she is having hallucinations again even though it doesn't list it as a side effect. She has glaucoma and hypertension. Should she continue taking this medication?

84 year old Female – Source: iGuard United States

iGuard Answer/Reply:

Some patients do experience hallucinations while taking Namenda. It is a small percent of patients, but it is still noteworthy. Her glaucoma and hypertension should not interfere with her taking it. Namenda is also prescribed for dementia. It is not an FDA-approved indication, but it is used for dementia as well. It is thought that it may slow the progression of the dementia.

iGuard Answer/Reply:

The only related symptoms that were reported by patients taking Namenda were dizziness and seeing hallucinations. There were no reported symptoms of vision issues during the manufacturer's clinical trials. If your symptoms persist or worsen, you should contact your doctor.

Question/Comment:

I have had debilitating migraines for almost 3 years. I have tried every preventative imaginable. I have been on Namenda for about18 months. I did really well for the first 4 months. Not a single headache! I was having 2-3 migraines a week plus a chronic daily headache every other day. Then for some reason I had a relapse. But since mid September of 2009 I have had 1 migraine! When I feel like one is coming on I drink a big glass of red Mt. Dew and use the Migranal nasal spray and that usually heads it off. But I did get a whopper yesterday - but that was the first of almost any kind of headache in about 4.5 months! I would definitely recommend it to migraines sufferers who haven't been able to find an adequate preventative.

Question/Comment:

I'm a male,71,with a history of migraine headaches since I was 19. I had tried virtually every medication available. Ones that worked, like Maxalt, resulted in rebound headaches so that I was having multiple migraines per DAY. No drug worked as a preventative. I've now been on Namenda for one year and during this time have had only four migraines - all mild. My neurologist says that the mild reactions I have are not due to the medication. I just hope no serious side effects develop.
