I was given Lisinopril because my BP was slightly elevated & I was keeping headaches. Since taking this my headaches have eased off. My doc has to adjust my dosage though so that the headaches stay away all day.

Question/Comment:

My son is taking Lisinopril, he is 18 years old. He had a very bad cough when he started taking it but, the cough has let up after a couple of months. But, he has had trouble sleeping. How long is this going to last? he can't keep going like this. Is their anything that we can do to help him sleep? What can the doctors do? Please help....Terri.

Answer/Reply:

If son still having trouble sleeping he may have a side effect of lisinopril that affects his sleep. Also if he is on other meds there may be a reaction. Ask pharmacist if this is side effect or call the drug company that makes lisinopril and ask the questions. If so then they can send the new information to you or your doctor.

iGuard.org Answer/Reply:

Trouble sleeping or insomnia is not a common side effect of lisinopril. In fact, the prescribing information for lisinopril does not list this as a reported side effect. The options to help him sleep will depend on his conditions and medical history. It would be best to talk to his physician, or have him talk to his physician, about his trouble sleeping so that the underlying cause can be found and treated.

Question/Comment:

Hmm, all this talk about 'coughing' while on lisinopril... I had it added to my previous prescription of hydrochlorothiazide a few months ago; since then I have been coughing A LOT!
I must say I also have a post-nasal drip and that also makes me cough; but the coughing became worse after starting the lisinopril.
I recently added nasonex and that has helped somewhat, since this cough seemed to arise mostly from the constant drip in the back of my throat causing me to clear my throat almost constantly... so I'm not sure if its from the lisinopril but I sure will ask my doctor next time I go!
Thanks for the heads up!

I started with Lisinopril, 10mg, on July, 17th, 2009; in addition to Metropolol, 50mg.
I noticed that suddendly and for seconds I was loosing my voice. Little by little itching and cough was added also, a continuous running nose. Cough was worst at night because of the position.
One time I felt like my throat was closing so much I couldn't breath. Still I couldn't relate this sympthomes to any respiratory development.
Then I received the IGUARD email and read the commentaries from people on the same medication. Thanks! I suspend Lisinopril and my doctor gave me Benicar HCT 20mg/12.5mg to try. for 3 weeks. I'm still worry to take it since, the Lisinopril still will be there.
